Tommy Riley has moved with his dad to Chicago from a 'nice place'. He keeps to himself, goes to school. However, after a street fight, he's noticed and quickly falls into the world of illegal underground boxing — where punches can kill.

Yellowbird lives in the ruins of an old house. He lacks the confidence to leave his home, no matter how much Bug, his labybird friend, tries to convince him to go out into the world. Attempts to toughen him up have had little success, so Bug seizes an opportunity that leaves Yellowbird unexpectedly finding himself the new leader of the flock that is migrating to Africa. We meet an investment banker from Wall Street, a stand-up comedian, a real estate agent, a marketing executive who perceives any career advancement as a sign of getting old, and a man whose thanks for being in a four-year relationship is a girlfriend who insists on an even greater commitment.
