It’s 1910 and we’re in the duchy of Lauffenburg. Everybody is celebrating the 600th birthday of the local hero, Otto the Ironman, who in his time saved the duchy from annexation and beat the enemy so badly, that he fled ... well, that’s what it says in the history books, at least. Sauerbruch works both as a university lecturer and as a surgeon, a famous doctor who not only helps his patients physically but also gives them spiritual comfort. After he has taken Olga Ahrendt to his hospital, he discovers during an examination that her suicide attempt is due to a serious physical illness. He intensively takes care of her without forgetting about his other patients, to whom he can give a new will to live, even if only through a small story. His grandpa gives the orphan boy Robbie a foal that they call "little brother". The boy loves the animal and wants to train it as a racing horse - but then his grandpa dies. Robbie's sister isn't old enough to care for themselves, so they get a guardian who decides to sell all the horses. Robbie hides his "little brother" at a farm, but it's hard for him to come up with the rent regularly..

A woman as mayor is quite unusual in Germany in the 1950s, but Dr. Fanny Becker is a lawyer with experience in local politics, which is why she gets elected mayor of Rosenburg.

Nora and Stefan fall in love with one another after an accident takes place, but then end up losing sight of one another later on. Stefan ends up saving the life of young Christine and becomes her fiancée. Christine, however, is Nora’s daughter (can’t see where this is heading, huh?). When Christine finds out that mom and her hubby-to-be had a rather intimate history, she takes a boat ride on a stormy lake. But the prophecy of disaster associated with the bronze figure “Melusine” does not come to pass: Stefan looks for Christine, finds her in one piece and stays with her. Nora, for her part, decides incest might be a bad thing and gives up Stefan forever to go back to the man she divorced (hey, way to feel wanted!). For some reason, the Nazis didn’t like the plot’s moral message and banned it after its completion.

Professor Mauthner, after many years of exile (having emigrated in 1933 to the USA), returns to Germany in 1948. He can in fact return to his teaching post, but the rejection and petty intrigues of his reactionary colleagues and students make his work almost unbearable.
