The year is 1939. The world is falling into chaos. Thousands of Poles, held by the Russians in a former monastery, are subjected to brutal indoctrination. An ambitious enemy agent makes it a point of honour to break the resistance of one of them. He is a young, world-famous pianist, respected by his fellow prisoners. His capitulation may result in winning many others over to the enemy's side. An insidious game begins, full of sophisticated manipulation, threats and promises. On May 12, 1943, Arthur Shmuel Zygielbojm committed suicide in London, in protest of the world's inaction in the face of the Holocaust. Now his brother is meeting with those who witnessed the hopeless struggle to stir the consciences of the great of this world.

On the eve of the Day of the Dead, among mysterious old rituals of the Vilnius region, ghosts of the past and present start to appear.

Based on the autobiographical memoir of Ola Wat, the film follows the ordeal of Ola and her husband, poet Aleksander Wat, during the Second World War. Separated after the Soviet invasion of Poland, Ola endures exile, persecution, and unimaginable hardship while desperately searching for her husband. Sustained by hope and love, she struggles to survive against the brutal realities of war and political repression.
