The humorous and touching story of six former creative anarchists who lived as house squatters in Berlin during its heyday in the 80s when Berlin was still an island in the middle of the former East Germany. At the end of the 80s, they went their separate ways with the exception of Tim and Hotte, who have remained true to their ideals and continue to fight the issues they did as a group. In 2000, with Berlin as Germany's new capital, an event happens forcing the group out of existential reason to reunite and, ultimately, come to terms with the reason they separated 12 years ago.

Since the mother had taken out a large life insurance policy shortly beforehand, suicide is suspected. Insurance employee Marlies Heidorn investigates the matter. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has purchased a CD containing files from a Swiss bank. It contains files on more than 800 tax evaders. However, there is not enough tax investigation staff to process all the cases before the statute of limitations expires. The successful tax investigator Karola Kahane decides to pick out a particularly prominent name from the list. Her goal: finally, a tax evader who had failed to declare more than one million euros should actually go to prison for stealing from the community.

Corinna Kleist is a juvenile court judge who, after a leave of absence following the suicide of a convicted teenager, is appointed to a 'problem area' in Berlin. She now tries harder than ever to change the system in order to prevent troubled kids from being turned into vicious criminals.
