In the winter of 1891 a stranger arrives in a small coastal town on the Isle of Man. His presence soon disturbs the lives of the local inhabitants, especially the beautiful daughter of the parson.

A miller's son, Johannes, falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Victoria. The novel follows them through adolescence, as Johannes struggles with the social hierarchy and becomes a successful author, and Victoria is forced into marrying Otto, a lieutenant, to save the troubled family economy.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of northern Norway, this film tells the story of a telegraphist in a very small community at the turn of the century.

In 1890, Pontus, the starving writer, wanders the streets of Christiania, in search of love and a chance to get his work published. All he meets is defeat and suffering while his sense of reality is withering. One moment he is delighted and the next he curses everybody. All the time he manages to maintain human dignity and pride.

A tragic love affair between Victoria and Johannes. She's the daughter of a rich estate owner and he's the son of a poor miller. Despite the deep love between them, her father makes Victoria ditch Johannes for the richer Otto.

When Edvarda arrives at the little Norwegian village, to stay with some family, she find the Lt., Thomas Glahn, very interesting. Soon they fall in love. It's a very passionate relationship, but this leads to problems. Both of them are very strong in their opinions, and both are behaving a little strange. Love turns to hate, and instead of doing all they can to please each other, they do all they can to hurt the other person psychological. They both do a great job, and what began as a love story turns into a sad and depressing story of two ruined persons. The story is told by Thomas Glahn from his "exile" in Thailand, where he in the beginning of the movie receives two green feathers from Edvarda.

Lieutenant Glahn arrives in a small village in northern Norway. He wants to live in peace in the company of his dog. The young Edvarda stirs emotions in the lieutenant.

In rural Norway in the early 20th century, the homesteader Isak makes a farm out of barren soil, together with his wife Inger and their two sons. Life is both harsh and fulfilling.

The story concerns Edevart (Trond Peter Stamso Munch), a young man who is learning about life an his place in it. In the story, he at first takes up with August (Helge Jordal), a charming trader who is at least half con-man. After trailing along with him for a while, he decides that August is not a man he wants to model his life after. He becomes acquainted with and falls in love with Lovise Margrete (Marika Lagercrantz) a woman living alone on a sheep farm. She has feelings for him also, but she remains true to her missing husband and their acquaintance does not progress to being a full-fledged romance. It is not until her husband returns to her life that any resolution to Edevart's frustration (which lasts for years) can be achieved.

After Victoria promises to marry a wealthy suitor able to provide desperately needed funds to save her father’s deteriorating property, Victoria’s self-worth plummets. Her loyalty and duty to her father drives her to repress her strong attraction to a lesser suitor, leaving him in a life of yearning for the unattainable Victoria.

Lieutenant Thomas Glahn, a hunter and ex-military man, lives alone in a forest hut with his faithful dog. Meeting Edvarda, the daughter of a merchant, they feel strongly attracted to each other, but neither understands the other's love.

The story is about how Ivar Kareno tries to publish his philosophical work, refusing to remove radical passages at the professor's request, and fails, being left without a publication, a doctorate, money and a wife.

Set in the township of Sirilund in northern Norway, "Benoni and Rosa" follows the journey of Benoni, a young postman and fisherman, as he grows richer and rises through the ranks to the merchant class, and strives to propose to the beautiful priest's daughter, Rosa.
