Marcelo and Márcia, a successful couple, have different social backgrounds. She's always been rich and attached to tradition, while her husband hasn't. One day he leaves for another city, Angra dos Reis, where he meets two girls, Lena and Tânia. Marcelo and Lena get involved, while Tânia is jealous. One night the three go to a party, where a tragic accident happens.

Beto, a young gigolo playboy, convinces his friends to break into a house to rape Marlene, a wealthy woman. They can not complete the mission, but the woman fall in love with Beto, who returns to become her lover. The case of the two, eventually involving the husband of Marlene, causes problems that the two can't solve.

Joviano is about to get married, but he has to give up his marriage to avenge the death of his father, murdered by Colonel Eufrásio. The colonel wanted to force Joviano's father to sell his lands, and started a bloody battle moved by refusal. Now he has to decide between his fiancée's love and revenge for his father.

The story, inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel of the same name – which fueled the abolitionist movement in the United States – depicts the conflict between enslaved American cotton planters and wealthy landowners in the South. The fight for freedom is led by Uncle Tom and his wife Chloe.
