During the course of a single night, various people cross paths in the pubs, bars, and hookah lounges of Cologne. The issues that all of Germany is talking about are put on the table: the patriarchy, the Middle East conflict, rising rents, and whether Jesus would still buy everyone drinks today. Political convictions are stiffened by alcohol, and old wounds are reopened.

Somewhere in the Münsterland region of the 19th century, a shepherdess and well-known soothsayer - known as the "Spökenkiekerin" in Westphalian - causes an uproar in the village community with her seemingly insane prophecies. The mayor, in particular, is annoyed by her prophecies. He decides to have her chased out of the village. But a lovely young lady comes to the shepherdess's aid with her occult powers.

During the time of German Empire, Luise von Kummerveldt wants to become a famous novelist. She works ambitiously on her first manuscript, but the patriarchal structures make life difficult. Her brother Veit is rather narrow-minded, and a mystery surrounds the disappearance of her sister Ida. It's time to rise up!
