In a quest to rediscover the spiritual values of his own people, an African filmmaker from the Gourmantche tribe of Burkina Faso visits an Aboriginal band, the Atikamekw of northern Quebec. The resulting documentary is a dialogue between those who divine the future in the sand with those who use snow-encased sweat lodges to reconnect with the spiritual world.

After foiling a plot against the crown, Katanga is named head of the army. Seeking reassurance, he consults a soothsayer who foretells a stark destiny: he will either ascend to the throne as king, or die in the next coup.

Newly retired from the civil service, Modibo is known for his honesty and has been called on to become the new chief of his home village. But he can't stand the intrigues and has other plans. Will he leave his family in the hands of those avid for power?
