Since her parents death, hobby-detective Trudi lives with her young aunt Julia. When a nearby Turkish restaurant is smashed one night, everybody assumes by default an act of racism. Trudi however did notice a strange guest named Mangold there the day before. Also the caretaker seems very keen on getting the restaurant out of the building. The police and host Kemal don't seem particularly interested in investigating the event, so Trudi starts her own investigations in the style of Sherlock Holmes, with the help of her friend Tom and runaway Rollo.

Manfred, a lathe operator, and Manuela, a seamstress, marry and try to find happiness together. They have two children in quick succession and realize that their simultaneous material advancement is beyond their strength. Marianne stops working and Manfred's position in the company deteriorates. The atmosphere between the two becomes more irritable, even more so when Marianne finds a new job. She becomes increasingly distant from Manfred, who is suspicious of her emancipation, and ends up sleeping with another man. But the two move towards each other and, after five years of marriage, find their way back together.

When Addi accidentally learns of the existence of a women's shelter, this is her long-awaited escape from violence and she flees to the facility with her son. Strengthened by the solidarity among the women, she founds a shared flat with others in order to regain her long-suppressed freedom. Director Cristina Perincioli had the story developed and acted out by residents of Germany's first women's shelter in West Berlin.

The series' storyline follows the inner workings of a small fictional hospital in the Black Forest region of Germany as well as the lives of the Brinkmann family of doctors who work at the hospital.
