Vienna Symphony

Johannes Brahms spent the last 25 years of his life not far from where the Wiener Konzerthaus now stands. On 21 June 2026, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the young Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva perform the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, under the baton of principal conductor Petr Popelka. Part of europiano, ARTE's special day celebrating the piano concerto across Europe.

To mark Music Day, ten European orchestras will perform some of the finest piano concertos alongside prestigious soloists and under the baton of renowned conductors from various cities across the continent. The programme for this exceptional concert features works by Brahms, Grieg, Chopin, Beethoven, Ravel and Mozart.

Yehudi Menuhin was the child prodigy of the 20th century, but also a philanthropist who, after World War II, devoted his work to reconciliation. In 1966, he met Herbert von Karajan, who had built his career under the Nazi regime. Director Henri-George Clouzot filmed this historic moment.

In 2020, for the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, Philippe Jordan and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra recreated the mythical evening of December 22 1808, when the composer presented his Sixth Symphony, also known as his Pastoral.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its new conductor Petr Popelka, celebrates Johann Strauss II in the splendid setting of the Teatro Rossetti in Trieste.

On 22 December 1808, four works by Ludwig van Beethoven were premiered at a major concert in Vienna: Symphony No. 5, Symphony No. 6, known as the ‘Pastoral’, Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 4 and the Fantasy for piano, choir and orchestra. Philippe Jordan and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra recreated this historic musical moment on 11 January 2020 in the Vienna Konzerthaus.
