Two high-school students, one French and one Algerian, have grown up together. Their friendship initially crosses the national and political division between their communities. As the independence struggle intensifies, however, their lives begin to diverge.

Brahim a master craftsman, is one of the richest men in the country. He takes a third wife, Fadah, a young beautiful girl, hoping that she will give him an heir before he is too old.
