Sushma Seth (born 20 June 1936) is an Indian stage, film and television actress. She started her career in the 1950s, and was a founder member of the Delhi-based theatre group Yatrik. Her first movie was Junoon in 1978. Widowed multi-millionaire Sharda lives with an only son, Munna; she is also the proprietor of a factory called, "Sharda Chemicals". Sharda arranges Munna's marriage with the factory's general manager, Ratanmuni Gupta's daughter, Mamta who is currently pursuing studies at Lovedale College in Manori. On the day of the engagement, Mamta insults her dad, Munna, and Sharda in the presence of a huge gathering, so the marriage plans get canceled. Gupta then arranges to get Mamta married to wealthy Mrs. Modi's son Azad, but before the marriage Mamta gets pregnant by a man disguised as Azad, and Mrs. Modi cancels the wedding plans. It is considered as a classic, among Indian television shows.The story revolves around three generations of the Diwan family, who live as an extended family in an ancestral bungalow in the suburbs of Mumbai. The serial takes the viewer through their various ups and downs. Their never-say-die attitude helps them overcome sibling rivalry, relationship troubles, business problems, irksome parents and in-laws. A distinctive feature of this show were its fast speaking characters.
