Lovers Dara (Azad) and Angoori (Indira) are parted due to Angoori’s father, who does not approve of the match. But after Dara wins an athletic competition, a priest sees to it that the young couple is united in marriage. Dara and his brother, Shahbaaz, travel on business to a faraway city and encounter Rufy, the owner of the lodge where they have sought shelter. Rufy takes a liking to the handsome Dara, but Dara rebuffs her advances. Angered by this, Rufy seeks the assistance of a witch to put a spell on Dara so that he will forget his wife and fall in love with her alone.

After the tragic passing of his parents, Raj Kumar is also separated from his elder brother. He ends up hungry and penniless in Bombay, and is taken in by a pickpocket thief, Usmanbhai, who trains Raj to be a master at picking pockets and stealing. It is in this atmosphere that Raj grows up and calls himself Raju Tardeo, for this is the area allocated to him to carry on stealing. Raju comes to know that a wealthy woman named Kamini has run away from home, and a reward has been placed in all newspapers. He finds her, pretends to fall in love with her, steals her necklace, and takes her back home to her oppressive uncle, who wants her to get married to Ranjeet.

Ram's marriage is arranged with a beautiful young woman named Chitralekha. After the marriage, Ram accuses Chitralekha of being inhuman, a ghost, who is out to kill him. But Chitralekha denies this, and pledges her lifelong love for him. Ram, his friend, Rajesh, and his wife decide to travel elsewhere, but no matter where they go, they see a ghostly apparition of Chitralekha following them everywhere.
