A neurotic waitress with a phobia of coins struggles with visions of the microscopic world of dirt and germs. As she fights to control her darkest fears, reality falls apart piece by piece.

While the world is in lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lore has to cope with a painful loss: her mother has died. Back in the small town of Erkelenz in North Rhine-Westphalia, she struggles against entrenched family structures and a paralyzing bureaucracy. Above all, she has to find a way to come to terms with the death and say goodbye to her mother.

Sofiane, the son of a former Algerian diplomat, has travelled a lot. Having moved to Lyon for his studies, he is the victim of an administrative decision and lives under constant threat of deportation. In the hope of regularising his situation, he agrees to work for a Muslim funeral parlour. Between parties, encounters and his job, Sofiane finds himself on a journey of initiation that will lead him to build his own identity and gradually move towards adulthood.

During the course of a single night, various people cross paths in the pubs, bars, and hookah lounges of Cologne. The issues that all of Germany is talking about are put on the table: the patriarchy, the Middle East conflict, rising rents, and whether Jesus would still buy everyone drinks today. Political convictions are stiffened by alcohol, and old wounds are reopened.

A group of young, ambitious candidates for a special police unit in Baden-Württemberg are driven to perform at their best. One of them is 23-year-old Rebecca Henselmann, who will soon be deployed in undercover operations. She works hard and is ambitious, just like her colleague Christoph Laurin, whom Rebecca is getting to know. The young policewoman is highly motivated in her operations against drug and arms trafficking. In the process, she encounters abuses of power and encounters right-wing extremist attitudes in the police force too.

Dennis can’t manage to separate himself from his possessive girlfriend. Nele chases away even the most perfect guys with her fairy tale fantasies. Mo freezes up when he is about to make an emotional connection. Katrin refrains from love, but makes up for it with throwaway sex.
