Like many other German indie bands, they face challenges: how do we reach our audience? And at what cost?

An actress is cast to bring Paula Modersohn-Becker, one of Germany’s most influential painters, to life. As she immerses herself ever deeper into the artist’s world, encountering key figures such as Otto Modersohn, Clara Westhoff-Rilke, and Rainer Maria Rilke, the lines between role and reality, portrayal and identification, begin to dissolve.

Germany, 1970: Students Karl-Heinz and Hedi try to find a way to be together from across the Iron Curtain, with her in the East and him in the West. Under the pressure of the GDR’s secret police, Karl-Heinz can’t move to East Germany and eventually, Hedi has to leave the country. Her escape, disguised as a holiday trip to Romania, goes wrong in many ways.

Documentary Today German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) is famous worldwide. But during her lifetime, her unconventional painting irked her contemporaries as she radically broke taboos, anticipating both Expressionism and Modernism. This documentary portrays an artist who unwaveringly pursued her vision for art, ahead of her time and without compromises.
