The small town of Gåtatorp in Småland is entirely dependent on its prominent furniture factory. But the factory is in danger because the weak economy means that the bank wants to shut down the factory.

The famous author Mark Storm's publisher is unhappy with his books and asks him to write books in a more popular genre, crime for example. When Mark Storm comes to his apartment, he finds a burglar, Kurre. He notices that they have a physical similarity and they change identity, which makes it possible for Storm to make empirical studies in the world of crime.

The Swedish officer Mikael Bourg has served with the French army in Africa. When he returns to Sweden after many years abroad to recover from malaria, he meets his son, a student who prefers partying with his frat friends instead of his bank job; a disappointment in his father's eyes. He also meets a young librarian, Ebba Garland, which makes him feel young again and distracts him from the sickness.

The wealthy Rudolf Trane helps the unsuccessful vacuum-cleaner salesman Rhuter to find a girl called Marianne. Trane, Rhuter and Trane's manservant John pretend to be waiters when Marianne's family is having a large dinner.
