Shabnam

British Market is a 1998 Malayalam film directed by Nizar and starring Vijayaraghavan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Sudheesh and Anju Aravind in major roles.

Mukesh is construction contractor who is deep in debt finishing a big building project, where the owner refuses to pay until the job is done. His friend (Baiju) comes up with the idea to fake suicide to escape from paying the loan sharks he borrowed money from. While setting up a rope to fake the suicide, a woman (Shobhana) running from thugs who are chasing her, comes into his hotel room. At the same time the police do a raid of the hotel , and find the two of them. In order to avoid trouble Mukesh and Shobhana pretend in front of the police that they are lovers , who were about to commit suicide since there families don't support their marriage. The police takes them to the station and sets up a register marriage at the station. Mukesh and Shobhana are forced to go along with the setup to avoid more trouble. After they leave the station Shobhana disappears , and Mukesh tries looking for her. How they meet again through fate makes up rest of the story.

Two prominent families & business rivals, the Uppukandam brothers, Kariachan (Captain Raju), Paulachan (Keerikkadan Jose), Xavichan (Babu Antony), Josekutty (Jagadish) & Thankachan (Baiju), & the Ettuveettil Pillais, headed by Ananthan Pillai (Rajan P. Dev) & his sons & nephews, have been feuding for years, aggravated by the fact that Xavichan had gone to jail for killing Vasu Pillai (Johny) of the Ettuveettil family, who in turn had killed Roy Mathews (Siddique), Xavichan's brother-in-law.

This is a film on moral policing. When this film was produced, the term `moral policing' was not in the public use by the activist circles or intellectual circles. It was produced in 1993. Perhaps, the film was a bit ahead of its time . More and more cases of moral policing were discussed decades later.. The victims and survivors of moral policing in India include women, religious minorities, sexuality minorities, Dalits, Adivasis, marginalized nationalities, marginalized linguistic cultures, marginalized regions and marginalized skin colours in India. Ilayum Mullum is based on certain real incidents that took place in Kerala.

Unni (Dileep) tries to help a rich old man (Fernandez)to get a young girl to marry, in exchange for money he needs to pay his family's debt, but ends up falling in love with her.

Kalyana Krishnan (Mukesh) is part of an orthodox Brahmin family who still follow the caste system. He ends up marrying Nirmala (Annie), a Christian girl. To get the family's approval for the marriage, Nirmala masquerades as a Brahmin orphan. The film continues with the tricks & travails that they have to face owing to this.
