Godzilla has become a distant memory for Japan when the destruction of a US submarine raises alarms for Admiral Tachibana. His estranged daughter Yuri investigates the legend of the guardian monsters, who must rise to protect Japan against the vengeful spirits within Godzilla that seek to destroy both the nation and its people for the suffering they inflicted in the Pacific conflict.

A group of archaeologists open a tomb that awakens horrible monsters, while journeyman Yusuke Godai is compelled to access a strange belt from the tomb to fight back against them. Also, a drunkard witnesses a murder by an unidentified lifeform near a church. Meanwhile, Yusuke is bothered by the idea of fighting and is unsure if it was right until he saw the daughter of one of the slain archeologists crying, making his reason to fight "to protect the smiles of people". This is the director's cut version of the first two episodes of the Kamen Rider Kuuga TV series.

Inugami Sahei, who built up the wealth of the Inugami Clan, passes away, leaving a will with Furudate, his legal adviser, for his daughters Matsuko, Takeko and Umeko, all of whom have different mothers, and for their sons, as well as for Nonomiya Tamayo, the granddaughter of a person to whom Sahei feels heavily indebted. The will states that all his assets are inherited by Tamayo alone, on the condition that she marries one of the sons of the daughters. Furudate's assistant learns the content of the will, and seeks advice from Kindaichi Kosuke, a private detective, as he senses the air of unease. Shortly afterwards, murders start to occur one after another in the clan.

Yusuke Godai awakens from a nap at the Pore Pore Tea Cafe and finds a scrapbook with newspaper clippings about his battles as Kuuga. As he reminisces about each fight, gaining each of his forms and the Gouram attachment for the TryChaser, Godai gets a call about a new Gurongi. Godai heads over and transforms into Kuuga to face off against the beast who introduces himself as Go-Jiino-Da!

On January 2nd, Yusuke Godai prepares the Pole Pole cafe for opening, reflecting on the events of the prior year's battles he's had as Kamen Rider Kuuga against the Grongi. This special serves as a clip show and is also referred to as episode 46.5

University professor Kenzo Oshima (Hisamatsu Nobumi) is stabbed to death by someone in an alleyway in Tokyo, and Inspector Totsukawa (Takahashi Hideki) and Detective Kamei (Takada Junji) of the Metropolitan Police Department's Investigation Department's Investigative Division 1 arrive on the scene. Edawakare is the driver of Sentaxi, a marvellous vehicle which is able to take a passenger back to his or her “life’s turning point”. His cool appearance is at odds with his talkative, meddlesome, sweet-toothed character. He gives advice to passengers who are flustered after failing in their life’s choice.

Tsukiko Otonashi is a fashionista who is too beautiful to be a detective. She is also intrigued by urban legends so much so that she believes all crimes are somehow linked to these legends. She even conducts her investigations in such a way as to prove them to be true. Tsukiko also likes to make use of whatever she can. She especially likes to enlist the help of crime lab officer Hitoro Katsuura, who happens to have a crush on her. Many other unique characters will make appearances as she investigates the crimes related to urban legends, using odd and exquisite techniques.

Tenchijin is the 48th NHK Taiga drama. It airs on NHK from January 4, 2009 every Sunday from 20:00 to 20:44 JST to November 22, 2009 spanning 47 episodes. The story centers on the life of the 16th century samurai Naoe Kanetsugu. Production began on April 27, 2007. The story is based on the novel Tenchijin by Masashi Hisaka and was adapted for screen by scriptwriter Eriko Komatsu. The series' music composer was Michiru Oshima.
