The action takes place in Odessa in the 1970s. Rosa, an Odessa woman, a mother and the head of the household, says goodbye to the Courtyard where her entire life unfolded, because her sons have decided to emigrate to Israel and take the elderly parents — her mother and father — with them. A staunch patriot and war veteran, Semen Margolin is ready to curse his children for such a betrayal, but with the help of his mother Rosa, he is somehow persuaded to make the move.

Pavel's mother hates his fiancee. When Pavel serves in the Army she writes him that Nastya is no longer faithful to him. Pavel decides not to return to his native town. But many years later he returns to his fathers funeral and finds out that Nastya died sometime ago. She left three kids orphans and her elder daughter is also a daughter of Pavel.

In the 18th century, Moldavian land was under the yoke of foreign invaders and the oppression of local boyars. A national liberation struggle unfolded in the country, in which the Hajduk led by Ataman Badiu actively participated. Boyar Manya, with the help of mercenaries, managed to capture him. But the boyar's daughter, who loved Badiu, gathered a detachment of Hajduk, who freed their chieftain.

People of different destinies were brought together by "Santa Esperanza" (Holy Hope), the name of an abandoned mining village turned into a concentration camp. They behaved differently and chose different methods of struggle. The film centers on the confrontation between a group of political prisoners and the management of one of the camps in Chile when the junta was in power.
