Petre Chirimpey, a talented inventor and rationalizer, graduates from school and stays to work in his native village. He dreams of becoming famous and eventually winning the heart of his former classmate Lucia Boston, who is in love with the animal breeder Shapteboy. Petre succeeds in both endeavors, and the film concludes with the wedding of the well-known inventor and the beautiful Lucia.

XVIII century. Moldova under Turkish yoke. The local nobility collaborates with the enslavers. Throughout the district in Moldova, the fame of a detachment of haiduks under the leadership of Gruya thundered, instilling fear in the lords and boyars. But Gruya was killed. Imagine the surprise of the authorities when they learned that a new Gruya had appeared and was preparing revenge.

Summer of 1940. The architect returns from Bucharest to his native Bessarabia with a firm desire to live outside politics. However, life forces him to make a choice.
