The old nunnery owns the best lands. Nuns rent out the land to local rich men, and exploiting peasants they have a wealthy life. The peasants live in misery. Especially, the family of the peasant named Levin. He is forced to give away his last horse, his son Andrii is imprisoned, his daughter Nastia becomes a maid of a rich landlord. Trying to prevent the master’s harassment, Nastia escapes and gets to the nunnery. She can see the other life of the nuns who manufacture false relics, drink alcohol and kill children. Nastia ends up in the basement for resisting one of the “spiritual pastors.” Meanwhile, her brother Andrii escapes from prison. He stirs up a rebellion and saves his sister. The film is lost.

Russian Empire, 19th century. Poor Nykanor leaves his village and becomes a miner in the Donbas. His son Ostap also becomes a miner and works in the mine for thirty years, but after his father's sudden dismissal, he realizes that the state system needs radical changes.

The first years of industrialisation. Disguised as a hunter, an ex-White officer Poloz, who is connected to the international intelligence, is hiding in the forest where the construction of a new power station has begun. An intern making photos of the buildings suddenly notices Poloz. Frightened to be exposed, Poloz kills the guy and makes a cut in the base of the scaffolding of the main building of the power station. In face of a failure, counting on his ex-wife Katia’s help, Poloz kidnaps a 10-year-old boy. Hrai, an engineer and the father of the kidnapped boy, finds Poloz’s hiding place in the forest, and his assistant Varrava shoots the White officer at that very moment when he tries to explode the main building of the power station. The film is lost.

The end of the 1920s. The capitalist world is in crisis. The fascists unleash war against the Soviet Union. The enemy attack interrupts the peaceful labor of Soviet people. Hundreds of production workers join the Red Army. At the front go Red Army units, columns of tanks, units of the people's militia. Enemy airplanes appear over the Soviet city, black bomb bursts are rising. The streets are moving mournful funeral processions of the first victims of the war. At the end of the movie, a worker appears on the screen, appealing to the audience to be ready for the war, which has not yet come, but will come “maybe tomorrow"

The film recreates the events of 1905. In the center of the picture is the struggle of the proletariat, led by the Bolshevik party, against tsarism. The demonstration of labor unrest is replaced by episodes of the Russo-Japanese war, Black-Hundred demonstrations, accompanied by a pogrom of Jews, and beating of the intelligentsia. The film paints the attitude of the Mensheviks towards armed insurrection, reproduces the picture of barricade battles, the arrest of the Council of Workers' Deputies and the brutal reprisals of the tsarist autocracy with revolutionaries.

In the late 1920s Jewish girl Dora falls in love with a young Russian Komsomol member. His parents,who are captive to religious superstitions, don't like Dora. She still goes to live with him and will find herself facing those superstitions in her husband home too.

Alexei Kovalchuk, who dreams of distant voyages, currently serves on the rescue ship Gremuchiy and annoys the entire crew with his lack of discipline. The captain and sailors desperately try to reform him. But it is only when battling the elements to rescue the stricken ship Belogorsk that Alexei shows composure and determination — and ultimately decides to stay on the Gremuchiy.
