A Carthusian monk, dedicated to silence and meditation for the last 25 years, must travel from France to Jakarta to get a signature that will renew the property lease for his monastery. Terrified of his experience on the airplane, he gets off at its first stop, New Delhi, plunging into the strange world outside his monastery walls.

A group of German boys is ordered to protect a small bridge in their home village during the waning months of the second world war. Truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, but the boys, full of enthusiasm for the "blood and honor" Nazi ideology, stay to defend the useless bridge.

Argentinian biology student Miro falls madly in love with young actress Mercedes, but is without a clue as to how to win her love. Since then he’s been living in the streets with Jo, eleven, both of them savvy to all the stratagems required for survival. The only thing that manages to draw Baba out of his silence and come into his own is music. One day a famous Malawi musician, Ben Michael, hears Baba playing and singing. Intrigued by his talent, he tries to help him by suggesting he performs at a concert.
