The Enlightener

Returning from Mecca, Darwis changes his name to Ahmad Dahlan as he is disturbed by the trend of Islamic laws in his society; that borders on heresy, Syrik (polytheism), and Bid’ah (wrong innovation). Using a compass, he proves that the direction of Qibla (that points to Mecca), in the Great Mosque of Kauman is wrong. The discovery angers every Kyai (Islamic experts), especially the head of the Great Mosque of Kauman, Kyai Penghulu Cholil Kamaludiningrat. Dahlan, who studied in Mecca for five years, is seen as a rebel upstart. Since the proposal of changing the direction of Qibla is rejected, Dahlan starts a movement calling for the change. On his first sermon as a preacher, Dahlan criticizes the habits of residents in his village in Yogyakarta: "In a prayer, only a sincere and patient heart is needed, it requires no Kyais, money, let alone offerings". As a result, Dahlan gets a hostile reception.

Ayat Ayat Adinda

A melodious voice does not necessarily makes Adina (Tissa Biani) a member of her school‘s qasidah team. Faisal (Surya Saputra), Adina’s father, forbids her. Faisal strongly urges her to focus on studies. Adina’s family never lives long in one place. They often move and are excluded wherever they live. Adina slowly began to understand. Her family are considered heretical. Although Adina does not understand what it is heretical. Driven by the desire to make his family proud and respected by others, Adina determines to follow MTQ contest and to win it. But, her desire gets obstacles. Faisal existence is considered a problem by the neighbours. Faisal gives an ultimatum to his wife and children: not to behave any kinds which make them into the spotlight. One little mistake will make them not only expelled from their homes, but their safety is also threatened.

KTP

"KTP," a short film by the Yogyakarta filmmakers Shinta Oktania Retnani (producer) and Bobby Prasetyo (director/screenwriter) has been a favourite on social media since its release in 2016. Spiced up with the ironic and piercing wit of Yogyakarta's intellectual scene, it provides fascinating insight into the difficulties of religious pluralism in Indonesia. The humorous but realistic problem it brings to light has since become more visible following a 2017 ruling that permitted new levels of religious diversity.
