Based on the novel of the same name by Vera Panova. The story takes place at a major defense plant in the final days of the Great Patriotic War and in the first months following the victory. The war has brought together very different people at Kruzhilikha — the name of the plant — united by a common goal: to support the front and do everything they can for the sake of victory.

Extraordinary and mysterious events begin very ordinarily: journalist Larsen arrives at the home of the famous writer, Nobel laureate Znorco, to conduct an interview. The writer lives alone on an island in the Norwegian Sea. During the interview, details of Znorco’s life and work are revealed. The writer's new novel is a genuine correspondence between Znorco and his lover, who later became Larsen's wife. Several years ago, she passed away, yet letters from her continued to arrive.

A young man arrives in a village to visit his uncle, a retired colonel, and finds the local community "enslaved" by a man who, according to him, "will remain in history." The situation develops into a tragicomedy and takes on elements of phantasmagoria.
