Kolya Pavlyukov lives in a small village. He can never find a job to his liking. But here in the village, many years after the Great Patriotic War, a front-line friend of the deceased father Kolya arrives. Only one day goes by, one long day...

A melodrama set in the post-war years about three lonely women working at a furniture factory. A story of their hard life, love, simple joys and sorrows. The song “Waltz of Parting” is performed by actress Nina Sazonova. The song “Love is a Ring” is performed by singer Nina Brodskaya (voice over).

The film is dedicated to the working class. On the example of the fates of the main characters, their biographies and characters, it reveals such urgent problems as the attitude of a working man to labor, the conformity of his inclinations to his chosen profession. The obsession of the heroes and their complete dedication to their favorite work is the core of the script's dramaturgy. For both Nyurka and Mikhail Antonovich, the factory is their home, with which their entire lives are connected.

Maria Odintsova, a young engineer, is a leader, secretary of the district committee of a small district, which is beginning to acquire important economic significance: it is decided to build a large hydroelectric power plant here. The heroine's conflict with the head of construction arises because of their different attitudes to the possibilities of using and preserving natural resources.

The plot centers on the people who began to form underground groups from the very first days of the occupation of Minsk: oil engineer Isa Kazinets, soldier Ivan Kabushkin, student journalist Vladimir Omelianuk, medical professor Yevgeny Klumov, party and Soviet worker Sergey Blagorazumov, and others. Their main weapon was their hatred of the occupiers. Soon, the underground fighters managed to establish contact with the partisans, and they began to plan joint operations.

Photo studio "Contemporary" in a provincial town lives with its everyday problems. The director is concerned over the failure to fulfill the planned targets, receptionist Alevtina wants to get married, and photographer Vladimir Oreshnikov dreams of becoming a professional photographer. Oreshnikov wants to receive the win himself, but his colleagues object to him, because the money that he spent on the bond were public, hence the win should be divided equally among all workers. It creates a controversial situation, which is successfully resolved on the very eve of the New Year, under the chiming clock...

One day in the life of a simple Soviet family. Spouses Stepanov's on that day decided to terminate the marriage, for which they need to appear in the people's court. This day is not the most successful for them. They leave their little daughter Dunya to the brother of Nadya Stepanova — Nikita. But for him this is also not a very successful day: recording on the radio, an exam at a theater institute, and even a quarrel with his girlfriend...
