One day in the life of a simple Soviet family. Spouses Stepanov's on that day decided to terminate the marriage, for which they need to appear in the people's court. This day is not the most successful for them. They leave their little daughter Dunya to the brother of Nadya Stepanova — Nikita. But for him this is also not a very successful day: recording on the radio, an exam at a theater institute, and even a quarrel with his girlfriend...

An elderly man - a naive, impractical artist of the musical comedy theater - writes an operetta about goodness. His son is a resuscitation doctor, very businesslike and practical, and teases him all the time. The marriage of Petrov Sr. to the young ballerina Alena also did not add harmony to their relationship. But one day, father and son suddenly realize how necessary they are to each other... When the young stepmother begins to be in danger during childbirth, the son stops being sarcastic and fulfills his human and filial duty.

Kira Georgievna is a famous sculptor. She has a loving husband, friends, and fans. She seems quite happy. But one day the past breaks into Kira's well-adjusted life: Vadim, her first husband, appears. In '37, he was repressed and spent 20 years in camps.

Set in late-1920s Soviet Union, Ostap Bender and Ippolit "Kisa" Vorobyaninov are after a stash of diamonds hidden in one of the chairs in 12-chair set. They are forced to go on a cross-country chase when the chairs are auctioned off.
