A reconstruction of Napoleon Bonaparte's years after Waterloo, from his exile to St. Helena until his death under mysterious circumstances: between hopes of escape and illness, the former emperor dictates his memoirs. Directed by Vittorio Cottafavi, the film is based on a story by Roberto Mazzucco, with a screenplay by Cottafavi and Giovanni Bormioli.

The film tells the love stories of several young people: Nando, owner of a mechanical shop, supplements his income by posing for photo novels, sparking jealousy in his girlfriend Marisa. Otello, who works as a barber, sincerely loves Adriana, Nando's sister, who has been promised to Franco, who is tempted by the charms of Ines, owner of the neighbourhood trattoria.

Christina of Sweden, in exile in Rome, takes a handsome Italian officer as her lover. But he is in love with the very young wife of an elderly count. After many adventures, duels, settling of old scores, the officer and the countess get married. Former Queen Christina finds herself another captain of the guard.

Holiday time in Corniolo, a resort 40 kilometres from Rome. In a recently opened hotel various characters sojourn and love stories begin and end.

"Antonio" leaves his family to live a prosperous life with Cristina. Her family live in a slum where their lives are complicated by young love and jealousy. A letter from a local priest that implicates "Antonio" in the murder of an English nobleman comes to light and soon they are all before the King.
