Set against the backdrop of the 1967 Six-Day War, the movie adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz's novel follows the escapist, drug-fueled riverboat meetings of a group of frustrated Egyptians from various walks of life.

Naïve young Muhasab is asked to accompany his more dependable friend, Mujahed, on a voyage up the Nile to Cairo. Once there, they will sell their boat, the "Bride of the Nile," in order to buy a barge that will make their village elders more competitive in business and trade. The story revolves around a young man who squandered all his wealth, joins a gang to counterfeit money, falls in love with a singer, marries her, but the police arrest him, the young man gets out of prison and tries to take revenge on the gang leader who tried to marry his wife during the period he was imprisoned, the gang leader plans to harm him in his work in which he works in order to support his family.
