Maoning Liu

A seven-part anthology film that probes the theme of childhood from various angles. Each part is directed by a different person, with techniques ranging from watercolor to cut-out.

Our narrator recounts his childhood growing up in a small rural village, where traditional superstitions still hold sway and supernatural mysteries hide around every corner. But a new era is dawning on China, and for this idyllic place, it comes in the form of a newly-built bus station.

My childhood memories carry two important symbols, a large magnet that I pulled around behind me and a dead friend.
