The story follows a mother with two sons—one her real son, a careless criminal, and the other unrelated to her but deeply devoted. While the kind son’s acts of compassion help him overcome every hardship, the criminal son struggles to earn his mother’s love and respect, learning that worth is proven through actions, not blood. The film is considered Sultan Rahi’s first major film and won five Nigar Awards, including Best Punjabi Film of 1971.

During the 1947 Partition, a mother and her children are separated while migrating to Pakistan. Years later, the siblings grow up in different parts of society, unaware of each other’s lives. The film follows their separate journeys and focuses on family ties shaped by loss and separation.

Khalid lives with his brother, Raza, his sister-in-law, Jamila, and his niece, Najma, in a humble household. Khalid's family struggles to make ends meet and fund his education. Despite their poverty, Jamila and Raza decide to arrange for Khalid's marriage, as per Khalid's wish, with his class fellow, Naheed, who belongs to a richer family. When the news of their marriage spreads in the neighbourhood, a neighbour of Raza who likes Naheed starts spreading rumour and gossip about the relationship of Khalid and Jamila, leading to a series of tragic events.

Based on the story 'Pagli' by Hajra Masroor, Jamil, a young engineer comes to East Pakistan where he joins the railway department. On station, there is a mentally retarded girl who often wanders there. It comes across to Jamil that there is a backstory behind her mental retardation. Some time before, her marriage was called off because her father could not fulfill the groom's demand of huge dowry. Her father died in result and she became unconscious/mad.
