A small Lithuanian town. The young engineer Algirdas Araminas completed the construction of the new bridge. On the day the opening was supposed to take place, the bridge was destroyed by German bombs. The war has begun. Algirdas is depressed, he gets down and starts drinking. However, when the Germans began to rebuild the bridge, he agrees to work.

The action takes place in Russia during the Second World War. One of the heroes - Kryukov - serves the Germans, the second - Eliseev - fights against the German occupiers.

A wealthy businessman, Meredith Borden, is murdered. Two innocent people fall under suspicion – Borden’s secretary’s wife and a building contractor. The characters are placed in crisis situations, when the problem of choosing a path, the problem of social and historical self-determination of the fate of the people and each person inevitably arises.
