Adapted from the Andersen tale and played out in musical comedy mode, The Ugly Duckling is set in a farmyard where roosters, hens, ducks and geese live and lay eggs together. The action takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia, during the period when persecution of Jews began. Tevye's already difficult life is further complicated by a series of events that test his faith. Will he be able to withstand all of these difficult blows? It is difficult to say how much a person can endure, but it becomes clear that faith helps a person not to break down in the most difficult moments of life.
