Aldar Kose is not a name, but a nickname. Aldar means deceiver, Kos - beardless. And what was the name of this man in fact, and whether he lived at all, no one will say for sure. But in every Kazakh village, in every yurt in the mountainous Dzhailau, they talk about Aldar Kos as their good friend. He tells about him in different ways, but everything converges on the fact that he was poor and kind, hated the oppressors of the people, fought against injustice and helped the offended... Like a tumbleweed bush, Aldar Koshe, who was forever wandering through the boundless Kazakh steppes, once met a beautiful woman and fell in love with her. But the girl loves another — a brave, honest and kind poor man, herding the herds of a rich man.

Zhaukhaz leaves her father's house, as custom dictates and her stepmother wishes. Zhaukhaz does not love her future husband, but she does not dare to break the old custom. Zhaukhaz, along with her husband and his parents, lives in a remote high-altitude pasture. The entire family tends a flock of collective farm sheep. The daily life of the shepherd's family is harsh, and the work is monotonous: cleaning the kennels, feeding the sheep, and, on sunny and quiet days, taking them out for grazing. The winter house is surrounded by silence. Sometimes it seems scary. On one of those days, when she fell in love with a young machine operator from Tanabay's neighboring brigade, Zhauhaz realized how vast life was and how fragile the bonds of old customs that tied her to an unloved man were.

1925. Soviet power arrives in the remote Karakalpak villages. During this time, the dzhigit Turumbet and the beautiful Jumagul fall in love with each other. However, after the wedding, the young wife leaves her husband’s home, unwilling to accept the Old Testament way of life of her husband's family. Turumbet, who participates in bandit raids, does not immediately understand the revolutionary changes taking place.
