A few days after the unconditional surrender of German troops, a group of Soviet soldiers is billeted at a farmyard which the war somehow never seems to have reached. This apparently peaceful picture is eerily undermined when the Red Army soldiers are confronted with the full extent of Nazi terror.

At the age of 18, Tatiana married Maxim, a widower, and became the mother of his three children. But soon her husband dies at the hands of bandits, and her relatives, seeking to take over the household, throw her out of the house. Some time later Tatiana marries Pavel, the father of four children, and by the age of 26 gives birth to three sons. But the war begins and with it come more severe trials....

The film tells the life story of the famous Russian scientist, researcher, traveler and pioneer Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay. The film shows the most interesting moments from the life of a scientist and his travels. Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay was the first to land in New Guinea, getting acquainted with the aborigines, their customs. Among the natives of New Guinea, Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay lives for several years. The scientist also falls in love with the daughter of the Vice President of Australia, the film shows the relationship between Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay and his lover.
