In 1925, Gabriela, a poor, uneducated, yet charming woman becomes cook, mistress, and then wife of Nacib, a bar owner in Ilhéus, a small Brazilian coastal town run by the local colonels.

Not until three years after the death of her husband Jolly, Kay dares to move back into their former home, persuaded by her new fiancée Rupert. But soon her worst expectations come true, when not only her old memories haunt her, but also Jolly's ghost, who doesn't approve of her new mate. In this documentary, Jorge Amado is filmed in his home, surrounded by his large family; in a bookstore, during an autograph session of one of his books, in a cinema in Salvador, at the avant-première of the film Tenda dos Milagres, by Nelson Pereira dos Santos, an adaptation of the book of the same name by Jorge Amado. Glauber films his friend with a lot of humor and affection. The camera evolves slowly, incessantly and quickly over the writer, his family members, actors and actresses from Nelson's film, in addition to passing through objects of candomblé rituals that make up Jorge Amado's museum.

And in the midst of the loneliness and pain of having lost her husband. Teodoro (Sergio Mur), Ana's friend and who was always in love with her, decides to start conquering her. Everything was fine, "normal, calm and a little boring" as a marriage should be. Until in one night Ana asks for a wish "that her husband returns", until suddenly her wish comes true. And now Ana does not know how to live with the ghost of her late husband and her current husband.

The central theme of the soap opera is the struggle for political control in the interior of Bahia between the two most powerful *coronéis* (landowning bosses) of the cocoa region: Sinhô Badaró and Horácio da Silveira. Virgílio, an ambitious lawyer, is summoned to the town by Colonel Horácio but ends up becoming involved with Ester, the colonel's wife. Captain João Magalhães is a card sharp who poses as a military engineer, successfully deceiving the entire town. He falls in love with Sinhô Badaró's daughter, Donana. By the end of the story, he reveals that he had only gotten close to the Badarós out of opportunism. After numerous clashes with Sinhô Badaró, Colonel Horácio secures political power in the town of Ferradas, with the acknowledgment of the local population.

The miniseries addresses the struggle of Pedro Arcanjo, guided by Magé Bassã, his holy mother, to protect African culture and integrate it into Brazilian society, creating a new culture. The plot takes place in the Bahian setting filled with the stories of the characters who intersect in Arcanjo's struggle: the friendship with Mestre Lídio, shaken when Rosa de Oxalá, his wife, falls in love with Archanjo; loves prohibited by the incompatibility of saints; the fight against the intolerance and racial prejudice of those in power.

The miniseries is an adaptation of the novel Tereza Batista Cansada de Guerra, by Jorge Amado. Born in the city of Cajazeiras, Tereza Batista, still a child, is sold by her aunt Felipa to the feared captain Justo. Collector of girls, the captain finds in Tereza someone who is not intimidated, even when she is mistreated. In her warehouse, she meets the student Daniel with whom she falls in love and surrenders. Caught in the act, Tereza kills the captain and is arrested. She achieves her freedom thanks to the intervention of lawyer Lulu dos Santos and begins to be courted by Colonel Emiliano. At this stage, she knows tranquility and security. But the colonel dies and she has to go to the house of Veneranda, the local pimp. All this misfortune happens while Tereza waits for the time to realize her big dream: to live alongside the fisherman Jereba, who disappeared from her life. Close to marrying Almério, a good man and settled in life, she meets Jereba, her true love.
