Gavriil Egiazarov

Dedicated to the development of the oil industry of Soviet Azerbaijan in the background of the first half of the twentieth century, including their selfless work in strengthening the economic and military might of the USSR.

In November, 1942, near the Volga, Stanlingrad is under siege of Commander Friederich Paulus and his 330,000 men. The Russian high command unleashes an operation to protect the Mishkova River to avoid that about four hundred tanks join Paulus' army. The Soviet artillery soldiers protect their position with their lives in a bloodshed with few survivors.

The love story in the remote village. Lyuba has a child, Nikolai has a wife. Nikolay, having become a projectionist, now, once a week, brings cinema to the village of Babino, where Lyuba lives. Once they loved each other, but Nikolai, unexpectedly for everyone, married another and since then tried not to be in this village. And now feelings have surged again, and both are unable to resist this love.

The year is 1940 and Nazi Germany is at the height of its military prowess, having captured most of Europe and eyeing the Soviet Union to the East. The Russian military command suspects hostile intent from Germany and so arranges for its spies to infiltrate ranks of the German military and the SS. Alexander Belov is a Russian spy, who travels from Soviet-held Latvia to Nazi Germany under an alias of Johann Weiss. His mastery of the German language, steel nerves and an ability to manipulate others help him to use his connections in the SS to ascend the ladder of the German intelligence. He uses his position to identify sympathetic Germans, who help him to procure vital intelligence, and to help local resistance movements in their collective fight against Nazism.

A movie about love and betrayal. About war, about returning from war. However, the film does not reflect Platonov's important theme of epiphany. In the story, the protagonist does not just forgive his wife, but begins to realize how hard it was for her in the rear and at the same time realizes his selfishness and moral deafness. The peculiarity of the movie is that the characters speak in Platonovian constructions, which sound very unusual for ordinary speech.

The war is over. Demobilized soldier Chepurnov goes to his fiancée Vara Karpova, whom he knows by correspondence. On the way on the ferry Chepurnov gets acquainted with the carrier Klavdia. The young woman knows his fiancée and knows that Valentina wrote not only to Chepurnov. But she keeps silent about it - she likes the thoughtful soldier, and she does not want to upset him. And the soldier likes Klavdia, and he already knows everything about her and knows that she is raising her son alone. But he goes to Valentina because he promised. Chepurnov won't stay there long.

The film, based on the war stories by Andrei Platonov, centers on the story of a soldier Ivan Vladyko. The war is over and Ivan begins to search for his son, who disappeared after their native village burned down. During the search he meets a woman with three children who takes a lively part in his fate.
