La Première éducation sentimentale (the first version of L'Éducation sentimentale), re-adapting the themes of first love, the intoxication of desire, and failed ideological revolution (that culminated in the Revolution of 1848) to the May 68 generation through a chronicle of the parallel lives of a pair of childhood friends, the pragmatic Henri and idealistic Jules as they leave their bucolic, rural hometown to separately pursue their baccalaureate - and real world - educations.

Clément, a young entrepreneur, is a happy father: married to the beautiful Alex, he is also the happy father of "Petit-Bonheur", his son. Despite his 30 years, he can't live without his father, Paul, a musician and widower, with whom he has a very close relationship. In addition to this exclusive relationship, the latter also takes care of his grandson on a regular basis. Two points which are not without provoking a certain jealousy in Alex. One day, "Petit-Bonheur", under Paul's care, falls down a staircase. At the hospital, where the child undergoes X-rays, Clément can't stand the wait for the exams and reprimands his father harshly. After this incident, the news is fortunately good: "Petit-Bonheur" has nothing serious and finds with joy the arms of his parents. Clément then realizes that his father has disappeared.

An attorney plays match-maker for her ex-husband, by hiring an actress to seduce him - all in an attempt to try and rid herself of alimony payments.

A well-bred, lovely, spiritual, sad young woman marries an attentive physician who loves her. She feels affection but no love. Soon after, without design, she falls in love with Pedro Abrunhosa, a poet and performance artist. He also loves her. She keeps her distance from him, confessing her love to a friend who is a nun and, later, to her husband. Hunger for her love and jealousy consume him; she attends him as he wastes away. With his death, she can marry and express her passion, but what she does and how she explains herself, particularly to her cloistered friend, is at the heart of the film. Glimpses of convent life and of Abrunhosa on stage give contrast and mute comment.
