Fyodor a single artist suddenly discovers about his young brother who is living in a foster home.

At the end of the 70s, a boy Mishka, abandoned by his mother and stepfather, lives in a provincial Soviet town. Curious, bold and angry. With his bluntness and fearless naivete, he conquers the local gangster John, and with the help of his patron begins to act in local taverns, finally leaving a dysfunctional family.

Set in a small Ukrainian village during the outbreak of war with Germany in 1941 Private Chonkin, not overly endowed with intelligence, is left to guard a downed military aircraft. The authorities appear to have forgotten about him so this leaves him free to work his chams on the village postmistress, Njura, untill the local militia are tipped off.

In a small, poor town, a young worker falls in love with an actress from a traveling theater troupe and tries to keep her close, dreaming and working hard to rebuild a new town while the troupe increasingly faces decline and the end of its run.

But the teacher's dreams aren't meant to come true: he becomes a victim of his own insanity and kills his friend and the hateful Varvara...

One night a stranger defends Lena from some hooligans and as Lena thinks, he continues assisting her incognito. The girl is ready to believe and convince others that her protector is that horrible maniac. At first, these relationships with her odd admirer seem as a gamble for Lena, but then she gets convinced that this game became deadly dangerous...

Focuses on the lives of two married Polish couples (one Jewish, one Catholic) and the personal and social devastation wrought by the Holocaust and its aftermath.

Heroes are under the tight control of criminals, and it can only be due to betrayal...

To earn money for married life, a young engaged man takes a job as an engineer on a privately operated oil drilling rig in the far North of Russia. A friend's letter brings the sad news that his fiancée has already married someone else and in desperation he quits his job and flies back to Moscow. There all his vast efforts to win her back seem in vain...

Each of the short stories is based on either one or several stories by a wonderful Russian writer. The heroes are ordinary people “of the people”, contemporaries of Shukshin, all of whose life’s ups and downs are inextricably linked with their country - the Soviet Union of the 60s-70s. The main thing that unites both the works themselves and the films made is a whole gallery of the brightest images and characters, a story about such different destinies and differently meaningful lives, a story in the center of which is invariably Man, with his love, quests, weaknesses and victories.
