The Berliner Philharmoniker dedicate their New Year's Eve concert to famous lovers from the repertoire, embodied with intensity by French tenor Benjamin Bernheim. On the program: Don José (Carmen by Georges Bizet), Lenski (Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky), Werther (in the opera of the same name by Jules Massenet) and Romeo (Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette). Conducted by Kirill Petrenko, works by Gabriel Fauré, Emmanuel Chabrier, and George Gershwin round out this festive program.

Kirill Serebrennikov is staging *Das Rheingold* as a global post-apocalyptic drama for the 2026 Easter Festival. The director is known for his uncompromising productions. In this new interpretation, he transforms the material into a symbol-laden global theatre piece. Kirill Petrenko will be the musical director of *Das Rheingold*.

Like an outcry the elemental force of the orchestra shatters the silence, the storm on the coast of Cyprus rages incessantly. The wind whips, lightening cuts through the roaring skies. As Othello, the great general and commander becomes entangled in Iago's web of machinations; as the calamitous seed of jealousy germinates and Othello's love for his wife Desdemona begins to decay, even on their wedding day; as Desdemona, "nevertheless insists, although she senses or feels that this harm comes her way, and that Othello in his jealousy is really capable of killing her" (Amélie Niermeyer) – with his Otello Verdi created an operatic drama, the likes of which had never before been so tight, so direct, so intensive and so beautiful, and still today unmatched.

With his velvety, lyrical voice, star tenor Benjamin Bernheim revels in the lovesick agonies of famous opera heroes: Don José from Bizet’s Carmen, Lenski from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Massenet’s Werther and Gounod’s Romeo. Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko provides some sunnier touches with works by Chabrier and Gershwin.

In the New Year's Eve concert 2024, the star pianist will interpret the full-handled Second Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms with the Berlin Philharmonic and Kirill Petrenko. In addition, magnificently orchestrated dance works by Richard Strauss will be heard: charming waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier and Salome's Dance with its offensive sensuality.

In the spring of 2024, the Berliner Philharmoniker, under the direction of their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko, presented a staged production of Richard Strauss’s thrilling and dark opera Elektra – the highlight of the Baden-Baden Easter Festival. The title role was sung by the acclaimed soprano Nina Stemme. Philipp Stölzl, who has caused a sensation with his spectacular productions on the lake stage at the Bregenz Festival, was the director and set designer.

The annual New Year’s Eve Concert is one of the highlights in the calendar of every classical music fan in Berlin and beyond. On New Year‘s Eve, the Berliner Philharmoniker invite an exceptional soloist for a festive gala. Together, the musicians bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new. The 2019 concert was conducted by Kirill Petrenko and featured soprano Diana Damrau. On the programme: George Gershwin: Girl Crazy - Overture, Richard Rodgers: If I loved you from "Carousel", Leonard Bernstein: I feel pretty from and Dances from "West Side Story", Kurt Weill: Foolish Heart from "One Touch of Venus" and Lady in the Dark - Symphonic Nocturne, Stephen Sondheim: Send in the Clowns from "A Little Night Music", Harold Arlen: Over the Rainbow from "The Wizard of Oz", George Gershwin: An American in Paris, Frederick Loewe: I Could Have Danced All Night from "My Fair Lady", Franz Waxman: The Ride of the Cossacks from "Taras Bulba."

This concert with chief conductor Kirill Petrenko provides an end to the year under the southern sun. The first stop is Spain, with sparkling ballet music by Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, featuring star guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas. There is a detour to South America with Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas brasileiras No. 4 and finally the Capriccio espagnol, in which Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov exudes a vibrant southern temperament with Russia colouring. As a tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven, the concert opens with the Leonore Overture No. 3.

At the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Kirill Petrenko conducts this new production of Alban Berg's Lulu, directed for stage by Dmitri Tcherniakov and starring the soprano Marlis Petersen (Lulu).

Can classical music be humorous? Absolutely! The Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko will demonstrate this at the 2026 New Year’s Eve Concert: in his sparkling Symphonie classique, Sergei Prokofiev parodies the music of Haydn and Mozart. Dmitri Shostakovich also had the First Viennese School in mind when he wrote his witty Double Concerto for Piano and Trumpet. In this performance, pianist Alexander Malofeev, born in 2001, makes his debut alongside principal trumpeter David Guerrier. Kirill Petrenko also sets off a fireworks display of mischief with Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.
