The authors, like Isaac Babel, rejected the depiction of battles, the simplification, and varnishing of reality, instead conveying the dramatic tension of the post-revolutionary years: the explosion of awakened human energy and the tragic collisions of destinies.

Timosh, a young village boy, finds himself in the ministry of Father Mikhail, a priest who hides in a convent with him after a scandal with the Count. There Timosh encounters the mundane mores of the monastery, where the abbess and sisters are steeped in greed, duplicity and intrigue, despite their lofty sermons on morality. The Russian Civil War is over and the White Guard are all dead or abroad.
