Jaromír Nohavica pochází z Ostravy. První píseň napsal již v osmi letech. Na kytaru hraje od svých třinácti let, přičemž původně jeho otec chtěl, aby hrál na housle, k těm ale nepřilnul. Sám se však navíc naučil hrát na několik hudebních nástrojů. V letech 1978–1981 dálkově studoval na SŠ knihovnické v Brně. Začal také studovat na Vysoké škole báňské, ale studia přerušil, vystřídal několik zaměstn…
