The story of catholic saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941), who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz.

After two years in prison, Adam returns home set on revenge against the uncle who betrayed him. En route, he lands a job on a highway construction site near his uncle’s village. The youngsters notify Henryk's wife of his whereabouts.

The authorities in favor of the Nazis are trying to restore order in a small town in Silesia. Their actions are fiercely resisted by a small group of residents.
