After the theft of his motorcycle, Lucio bums aimlessly around Buenos Aires drifting from one arcade and record store to the next, indulging in short chats with friends and, more often, setting out onto the streets alone.

A new patient mysteriously appears in a psychiatric ward. He claims to come from another planet to study humans and their behavior. The alien is gentle but criticizes humans for their harsh treatment of each other. The assigned psychiatrist is himself unhappy, and affected by the patient's insight. But he is ordered to treat the patient according to institutional procedure.

One day in 1930, José Américo Ghezzi ("Bepo")—an unemployed anarchist stonemason—leaves his hometown, not to return until 1955. For twenty-five years, he wanders with no direction other than the path of the railway tracks, joining the silent world of the "crotos"—itinerant laborers—where he meets "the Frenchman," a mentor who leaves an indelible mark on his life. Back home, his friends and a woman await him, weaving the fabric of their own lives. Sixty years later, facing the camera, he relives his romances and his worldview in a kind of collage of perspectives and dreams, centered on the fundamental question: "Is freedom possible?"

He is a writer and Ángela, a mature woman, is his domestic employee. Since he can't find inspiration, he decides to accompany her on her work day to other houses. Thus, delving into other people's lives, both begin to stop seeing each other as strangers and have fun, momentarily forgetting their own problems for a while. Without romantic tensions, the two simply enjoy sharing the day and, while Ángela cannot stop remembering Pedro, her dead husband, he only listens. Without advice or sermons, their two visions come together to make, at least that day, a different experience.

On December 30, 1999, seven friends (plus a surprise guest) meet for a barbecue on the terrace of Tito, the host. The meeting continues until the early hours of the last day of the end of the millennium.
