Eleven years ago, an 8-year-old girl disappeared from a small German town on the German-Czech border. Although her body was never found, nor were there any traces of blood or DNA evidence, a mentally-disabled man was coerced to confess to the crime. Even though he withdrew his admission of guilt two days later, the forced confession was enough to convince the ruling judge. The responsible investigator Altendorf was discharged so that the investigation could be sped along by another colleague.

In her former life, Eva Bernhardt was called Evelyn Frank and was a notorious brothel owner in Berlin. But then she decided to testify as a key witness against her husband and his business partner and was accepted into a witness protection program. With a new identity, she now lives as Eva in the Bavarian mountains and starts all over again. She settles into her new surroundings surprisingly quickly and soon makes friends. The two witness protection officers Ines Meder and Holger Nolting observe Eva skeptically and with a watchful eye. Ines in particular has some doubts about Eva's sincerity when she is introduced to her as her daughter. When Eva then wraps the manager of a restaurant around her finger, Ines is certain that Eva is playing a false game...

Karin Wegemann has been transferred. Instead of being on active duty at the LKA, she has been teaching prospective colleagues at the police academy for several months. One evening, Wegemann meets investigative journalist Maik Fellner. Child trafficking in Germany has been Fellner's topic for years, but his articles ultimately have no effect whatsoever, and his harrowing research is at best denigrated as slander. Fellner needs Wegemann, but he needs her as an active police officer. He puts Wegemann under pressure and tells her about a 14-year-old witness who has put him on the trail of a child trafficking ring in Potsdam. Her investigation puts her in dire straits, because the perpetrators also know that there is a witness.

It's Lukas' birthday and he runs away from home to the city - but only for three days. Having just turned 14 and being on his own for the first time, he develops his very own, intense way of experiencing everything. But his light-footed excursion quickly takes a turn when he meets Sonja. Sonja is blind. Sonja is three years older. And Sonja's story and her approach to life touch and impress Lukas so much that his little journey takes a whole new direction - and gains a destination.

Henriette is terminally ill with cancer. Since her diagnosis, contact with her sister Gerlinde has fizzled out. It is only when she talks to the open-minded pastor Linus Gobert that she begins to accept her fate and gets closer to her sister again. But before she can tell Gerlinde about her illness, she is shot dead in the street. Gerlinde, the only witness to the crime, doubts that it was a robbery.
