This film is the story of a 13-year-old girl from Hamburg who, after the death of her mother, wants to travel to her aunt Lena and her family - her only living relatives - in Jena. Crossing the inner-German border in 1988, even from West to East, is very difficult. When Lilly finally manages to make the detour via Berlin, she realizes that not everyone in her aunt's family is happy about it. There is a secret in the family that has to do with her mother.

In a small Franconian town, Werner Wild enters Georg Baum's store and wants to become a baker. "I like to eat good bread" - that's all he knows how to say to the sales clerk Gisela. But under the wing of Master Baum, the newcomer quickly becomes familiar with the intricacies of bread and pastry making. Soon the loner Baum finds himself increasingly confronted with a changed economic environment.

Robert, a masseur who is hard of hearing, is unaware that he has inherited millions. Four people want to take it from him: stockbroker Kuhl, his employee Späh and their friends Anna and Iris. Späh wants his girlfriend Iris to marry Robert in America in order to get half of the money. After a murder that Späh commits, but of which Robert seems suspicious, Robert actually flees to America, but not with Iris, but with Anna, who has since gotten wind of the affair. Robert and Anna marry in Las Vegas, and it is only back in Munich that Robert finds out about his inheritance. Robert leaves Anna, Späh shoots Kuhl and there is a showdown between Robert and Späh on a French island.

Pauline is very disappointed by her boyfriend. Fearing lonely holidays, she accepts her boss Max's invitation to celebrate white Christmas in his parents' mountain hut. It is taken for granted that she is Max's girlfriend. He enjoys the misunderstanding and asks Pauline to play along.
