Before he became cult director Douglas Sirk, Detlef Sierck cut his teeth on such lavish European star vehicles as Das Hofkonzert (The Court Concert). Marta Eggerth is cast as Christine, a young singer who aspires to find out who her father was. Her odyssey brings her to the court of a mythical kingdom, where she is romanced by handsome lieutenant Walter (Johannes Heesters). He is warned not to lose his heart to a "commoner," but all turns out all right when King Serenissimus (Otto Tressler) turns out to be Christine's long-lost daddy. Hofkonzert was designed as a comeback for Marta Eggerth, whose star had eclipsed by the mid-1930s.

When Bartos, the director of the Odeon variety theater, cancels an artist at short notice, he hires the Terrys out of necessity, whose parents were successful variety artists, but who had not yet received an engagement themselves. Both are supported by Tobs, a friend of their parents. While blonde Mara Terry arrives punctually for the first rehearsal, her dark-haired sister Kora is late like a diva and acts aloof and snippy. For 999 years, the mountain spirit Rübezahl has lived deep underground in the Giant Mountains. No one has seen him since. But when he learns that people no longer believe in him and that greed and injustice reign supreme, the lord of the mountains descends into the valley to teach humans a lesson with his magical powers. He harnesses a servant who is working his old horse to death to his carriage and gives him the whip. The mountain spirit turns the gold of his rich and miserly cousin Klaus into stones. Having become hungry on his journey, Rübezahl stops at an inn in the guise of a carter. When the greedy innkeeper, out of sheer greed, nibbles half of the scrambled eggs he has ordered from his plate, Rübezahl demands the eggs he has already paid for back...

The story follows Riccardo, an Austrian pianist studying in Rome and engaged to local woman Fiorella, who has a brief encounter with French tourist Germaine, igniting a love triangle involving misunderstandings, a false arrest, and romantic schemes. Starring Barbara Laage as Germaine, Alberto Sordi as Alberto, Anna Maria Ferrero as Fiorella, and Erwin Strahl as Riccardo, the film blends humor with lighthearted drama set against the backdrop of Rome's iconic landmarks. Paul Hörbiger plays Professor Roth, serving as a stern mentor to the protagonist Riccardo and delivering comic relief via his rigid academic counsel amid the story's chaotic love triangle.

Blonde goddess Marika Rökk plays Julia Koster, a ravishing red-headed musical revue star and her opening number, "At Night It Isn't Right To Be Alone", playing to a packed theater, is both an eye-popper and a jaw-dropper.
