Moscow, 1978, the eve of the Olympic Games. In the Soviet Union, several cases of fraud have been registered, the victims of which were women "with a position in society." The victims describe the signs of the criminal in the same way: a charming, intelligent middle-aged man, easily insinuates himself into trust. After the suicide attempt of the deputy chairman of the district executive committee, a professional detective, police captain Shmakov and senior police lieutenant Polina Novgorodtseva, takes over the investigation of a high-profile case.

Moscow, year 1982. Scientist Matvey Pyotrovsky creates a time machine and conducts a scientific experiment, which divides the apartment in two parts. On the way to fame, future stars are waiting for crime bosses, crimson jackets, the "latest" gadgets in the form of pagers and tetris, and, of course, world-famous idols, including Freddie Mercury and Kurt Cobain.

The Second World War. Leningrad was in blockade in the winter of 1941. The only way to deliver food and other supplies to the city is through the icy Lake Ladoga, the so-called “Road of Life”. The path itself passes through the ice of the lake. But the Nazis are preparing a diversion along the way, and their informant is most likely a truck driver. To deal with this situation entrusted to the captain of the NKVD Sergienko ...

It is difficult to call the primitive era of human history a paradise like the biblical Eden. Instead of a quiet life, two tribes living along the banks of the same wide river face severe danger every day. The Chief's tribe is losing ground due to the weakness and inexperience of their leader, who wants to be a friend to everyone. Kirill, a former student who was expelled from the capital's university, returns home to the province, but finds a once picturesque corner of the country in a deplorable state. A local factory is dumping waste into the river, protected forests are being cut down uncontrollably, and spontaneous landfills are proliferating around the city. The weak-willed elderly mayor turns a blind eye and dreams of resigning, handing over the election to a protege of businessman Zuev, the owner of the factory and the informal owner of the city. In order to save his hometown from corruption and environmental disaster, Kirill and his childhood friends decide to take an ambitious step: register a "green" movement, nominate their candidate for mayor and join the fight against a greedy competitor and the distrust of local residents.

The events of the film unfold first on the territory of China, in Manchuria, then transferred to the USSR, have an extensive geographical area: from Harbin to Leningrad, and cover the period from 1928 to 1953. The plot is based on the complex, full of dramatic events, the fate of a man — Boris, the son of an employee of the Chinese-Eastern Railway.

In search of sensational material, the capital's journalist Tatyana Blok finds herself in the village. The reason for the shooting is large-scale: one morning in the village of Verkhnyye Brody (across the river from the Lower Ones), all the people disappeared. Twenty people at once. Money, documents, and all the livestock were left in place. Tatiana takes over the investigation. For her, this is a chance to prove that she was fired from television for nothing, and she is able to shoot high-quality investigative reports. But for this, Tatiana will have to learn how to live in the village, or rather, to survive in it.

After death, Vitya and Borya get a chance to move on, waking up every day in the bodies of strangers. A mysterious mechanism calculates the deeds done during their lifetime and suggests that they correct the "moral balance" by giving them the opportunity to be reborn in order to correct karma with a "good deed." They live like in a computer game, where every completed task is a plus or minus to their new karma.
