In a surreal, bureaucratically rigid society where ending one’s own life requires an official government permit, depressed florist Stefan Pielek makes the mistake of attempting suicide without the proper paperwork. Under police supervision, he submissively files his official application and closes his shop while waiting for the approval. However, during his aimless wanderings through the city, he meets a young woman who calls herself Ophelia. After falling deeply in love and rediscovering the joy of living, Stefan receives the ultimate bureaucratical blow: his suicide permit is approved, meaning that by law, he no longer exists.

A rich Frisian farmer has been murdered in Amsterdam and police duo Grijpstra & De Gier are sent to investigate. Adjutant Grijpstra has problems at home again and is happy to leave for Friesland to investigate the murder. Sgt. De Gier finds the Frisian Hylke much more interesting than the murder case. In Leeuwarden there is a real Chinese war and a brutal robbery at the cattle market. Suddenly there is that friendly rattling, asthmatic rat who provides an unexpected solution.

When the police picks up a suspicious man carrying a knife, he appears to be suffering from amnesia. They send him to a special hospital to put him under observation. One day, as Senior wanders aimlessly through the city, his attention is drawn to demolition workers tearing down an old building. Among the rubble, Senior discovers an old model ship. He takes it home and begins studying old ship logs and nautical charts. Thomas also shows interest, and before he knows it, he finds himself embarking on a new adventure with his friends and Senior.

Baantjer is a Dutch television programme which was broadcast by RTL 4 from 6 October 1995 until 1 December 2006 for a total of 123 episodes in 12 seasons. It stars Piet Römer as Jurriaan 'Jurre' de Cock, a police detective, and Victor Reinier as Dick Vledder, his helper. The series is based on the novels of writer A. C. Baantjer. In 1999, RTL 4 broadcast the television film Baantjer, de film: De Cock en de wraak zonder einde because of the tenth anniversary of the network.

When the chest is later stolen by bandits Oenk (Tabe Bas) and Boenk (John Lanting), Doctor Kroch starts to think there might be more to it after all. He decides, together with his servant Valet (Henk Molenberg), to try to find the sender of the letter, the Duke of Woestewolf (Ton van Duinhoven). During his journey, the doctor is warned by Esmeralda, a gypsy fortune-teller (Elsa Lioni). Nevertheless, he continues his journey. “Ghosts do not exist. Everything can be explained by science,” the doctor claims. But the closer he gets to Woestewolf, the stranger his adventures become.
