Joe Morgan, a previously respectable worker, becomes a town drunkard, losing his job and neglecting his family due to the influence of the local tavern, the "Sickle and Sheaf". Joe's daughter, Little Mary, frequently comes to the bar to beg her father to return home. During a confrontation in the bar, a thrown glass hits Little Mary, resulting in her death. Devastated by the death of his child, Joe vows revenge but reforms, ending his addiction and reuniting with his family.

In a mock fraternity initiation, a group of Yale students haze Paul Browning for tattling. When he learns that the leader of the group, oarsman Buck Simmons, is also winning the favor of Aida Courtlandt, the dean's niece, the jealous Browning and gambler Burton Hampdon, to whom Browning owes money, attempt to disgrace Buck so he will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming Yale-Harvard race. After they fail to lure Buck to bed with a girl, Browning takes Aida to a roadhouse so that Buck will have to break training rules to go there. When the coach, suspicious about the roadhouse incident, finds a letter planted on Buck about a deal for him to throw the race, he suspends Buck, but with Aida's influence, the dean straightens matters out. After Yale wins a close race, Browning shoots at Buck, who then trounces him. Proclaimed captain of the next year's team, Buck becomes engaged to Aida.

John Kavanagh, a Maine lumberman, clashes with Stephen Marthorn, owner of a spruce-logging company, when Marthorn orders his men to make their drive before Kavanagh can get his logs down the river.

This 1922 film adaptation marks the 100th anniversary of the author’s composition. It was first presented on December 16th 1922 by the Film Mutual Benefit Corporation, an organization for producing motion pictures for the benefit of charity. One-halg of the proceeds was turned over to the America Committee for Devastated France, Inc., and one-half to the Maternity Centre Association of New York. Authentic details of the costumes in the picture are said to have been furnished be the descendants of Dr, Moore living in New York. With the aid of old portraits John Woodford and Marie Olivette were able to appear as veracious reincarnations of Dr. and Mrs. Moore. This 94 year old obscurity, rescued from near oblivion, is supported by an inviting score of such musical miniatures as Pan & The Wood Goblins, Dance of the Icicles, and Entr’acte Gavotte from Minon. The new title cards are complimented by the illustration of the first publication of Moore’s timeless treasure.

Two confidence men pose as investors to fleece the denizens of a small town. They build a carpet-tack factory with the funds, but some stockholders are suspicious. Eventually, someone tries to take over the business by buying it from them. The film is presumed lost.
