The movie is set in 1788-1843, a tumultuous era for Walla Wallachia, when the Phanariot regime was exercising its power over the people. In a world marked by oppression, the young Iancu Jianu becomes a symbol of resistance, fighting against abuses. Together with his friend Mereanu, Jianu plans courageous actions to stand up to the tyranny of the Phanariots and bring justice to the country. His journey brings him into contact with Tudor Vladimirescu, the leader of the 1821 rebellion movement, and the two unite in a fierce struggle for freedom and independence.

In late 19th century, a Transylvanian revolutionary fleeing the Imperial authorities goes to Italy where he meets a beautiful soprano who later disappears under mysterious circumstances.

After 1944, his situation improved thanks to the benevolence of an enlightened communist nicknamed Botticelli, whom he once hid from the police in the attic of his house. He receives commissions for large-scale cultural monuments, although he has "on file" the ballast of his children lost in the legionary adventure and continues to accept, in his entourage, a circle of sycophants from the former elite.
